Why People Believe in the Paranormal – Psychology of Ghosts, Astrology and Comfort in Uncertainty

Why People Believe in the Paranormal: How It Helps Us Feel in Control

Many people believe in ghosts, astrology, psychic powers or other supernatural forces. Studies show that between one-third and half of people in the US and UK hold some kind of paranormal belief. But why are these ideas so attractive to so many?

Researchers say one reason is that such beliefs help people feel more in control when life feels uncertain. When something confusing or frightening happens, our brains naturally try to find patterns and explanations. Paranormal stories make random events seem meaningful — like astrology linking the stars to our lives, or conspiracy theories explaining chaos as someone’s plan.

These beliefs often bring comfort. Life can be scary because it’s unpredictable and ends one day. Supernatural ideas — such as fate, destiny or a spiritual world — make people feel that there’s a higher power guiding everything, and that life has meaning.

Believing in spirits or the afterlife can also help people cope with loss. Stories about ghosts or communication with loved ones offer emotional connection and peace. In this way, paranormal thinking can make the world seem less frightening.

However, not all paranormal beliefs are positive. Some can make people feel powerless, blaming problems on magic or curses instead of taking action. Studies show that when people believe in controlling external forces — like gods or fate — they tend to feel more anxious and less in control of their lives.

On the other hand, beliefs focused on personal spirituality — like astrology or manifestation — can make people feel more empowered. They focus on personal meaning rather than fear.

Psychologists also note that human minds love to find patterns, even when none exist. That’s why we see faces in clouds or believe bad luck means we are cursed. Another bias, called the illusion of control, makes us think we can influence things we actually can’t — like health “miracle cures.” Research from 2024 showed that people who believed in pseudoscience were also more likely to hold such illusory beliefs.

Culture and media play a big role, too. Movies, TV, and social media constantly show supernatural themes, which makes them feel more real. When people share ghost stories or psychic experiences online, it reinforces the idea that the paranormal is part of everyday life.

Scientists say the key is not to mock or dismiss believers, but to understand the emotional needs these beliefs fulfill. They help people cope with uncertainty, anxiety, and loss — giving comfort, purpose, and meaning.

At the same time, education in critical thinking helps people recognize the difference between helpful spiritual ideas and harmful superstitions. The goal is balance — to stay open-minded but also reasonable.

In the end, paranormal beliefs persist because they touch something deeply human: our need for comfort, connection, and control in an unpredictable world.
