This chilling story was published in the American newspaper Altoona Times on October 27, 1884, after a letter was sent to the publication by a certain Dr. Charles S. King. Dr. King lived in Buffalo, New York, USA, and claimed that this happened to one of his patients.
It all began when two men came to see Dr. King. One of them was injured, and the other accompanied him. The doctor did not disclose their names. The injured man told Dr. King that he had been attacked by a “ghostly entity.” Initially skeptical, the doctor examined the man and discovered several serious bruises, a knife-like cut, a broken rib, and damage to his right lung. Dr. King could not identify what could have caused such injuries.
The patient explained that he had been asleep when he suddenly felt something grab him by the throat. He tried to resist but could only scream before being struck in the chest. He felt his bones break and was then stabbed multiple times. “The blade pierced his side several times. He was found unconscious on the floor, illuminated by moonlight from the window. All the windows and doors were locked from the inside, and nothing in the room appeared disturbed.”
The doctor was so shaken by the account that he decided to visit the patient’s home, despite it being 30 miles away. That night, they went to sleep, but before the doctor could doze off, he was awakened by a terrible scream and a loud thud from the patient’s room. Rushing in, he found the man unconscious on the floor, bleeding from his mouth, with fresh bruises all over his body and more broken ribs.
The injuries were so severe that the doctor could do nothing to save him. Shortly before his death, the patient regained consciousness and described how an invisible force had grabbed him, violently slammed him against the wall, and then threw him to the floor. Dr. King was convinced that the patient could not have inflicted such injuries on himself under any circumstances.
