Crop circles were a popular topic in global media about 15 years ago, but interest in them has since faded due to the overwhelming number of obvious fakes. Nevertheless, amidst the fakes, there were real crop circles, and these are often associated with another anomalous phenomenon: sightings of unusual creatures near the circles.
The most interesting accounts come from Matthew Williams, a British man who specialized in making fake crop circles and was even arrested for damaging fields during his “entertainment.”
A few years ago, a real crop circle appeared in Wiltshire, and Williams encountered a man who claimed to have witnessed its creation. According to the man, one night, he felt an inexplicable urge to go outside, get into his car, and drive to a wheat field. Stopping by the road, he walked into the middle of the field, parting the stalks as he went. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a black humanoid figure appeared above him, hovering not far off the ground. “It reminded him of the Mothman,” Williams recounts.
The man froze in fear, staring at the figure. Then, an ideal circle of flattened stalks formed around him, after which the strange hovering entity disappeared. The man snapped out of his trance and, puzzled, walked back to his car, not understanding why he had come there or what had summoned him, if indeed he had been summoned.
On another occasion, Williams and his friend Paul sneaked onto a farmer’s field to create their own circle. They were in the process of flattening the stalks when three bright, small glowing orbs appeared at the edge of the field. The orbs floated low above the wheat, moving toward them. The closer they came, the more unsettling the atmosphere grew.
Eventually, Williams and Paul fled the field, with the orbs following them. The orbs moved smoothly, as if gliding along invisible rails just above the stalks. To Williams, they seemed almost alive. He ran to get their car while telling Paul to hide in the roadside bushes to avoid being seen.
When Williams returned with the car, he found Paul walking down the middle of the road, carrying all their equipment. “Are you crazy? If anyone sees you with all this stuff, we’ll get arrested!” he shouted. Paul, visibly shaken, replied, “I’d rather get arrested than stay back there.”
Paul explained that while Williams was fetching the car, he had heard strange, loud cries coming from the field—sounds that were neither human nor animal. Alarmed, he had quickly left the bushes and headed for the road. They never discovered the source of the sounds.
Another story comes from researcher Marcus Matthews, who studies anomalous black cats in Britain. In the same Wiltshire area, where a new crop circle appeared overnight, a passerby reported seeing a large black cat sitting near the center of the circle.
