A video of a lightly clothed yogi calmly sitting and meditating in the mountains, seemingly unaffected by strong winds, snow, and frost, became extremely popular on Indian social media at the end of February.
Judging by the snow covering his head and clothes, he has been sitting there, possibly for an hour or even several hours, yet he doesn’t seem to be bothered by it. He appears to be alive, as his hands’ skin isn’t covered in snow.
It was claimed that the yogi was meditating in the Himalayas at a temperature of minus 55 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 48 degrees Celsius). Such low temperatures do occur in the winter Himalayas, but how can a person endure them in such light clothing without freezing?
Unsurprisingly, the video sparked lively discussions. Many doubted its authenticity, believing it to be created by neural networks or through video editing. However, when reports about this miraculous yogi appeared in newspapers, the discussions became even more heated.
Eventually, a statement was made by Yogi Kaulantak Peeth, the spiritual leader of a community from Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. He claimed that the yogi in the video was Satyendra Nath, who had been associated with their organization for over two decades and had been ascending to meditate in the Himalayas for a long time.
He also explained the circumstances under which the video was filmed. It turns out that Nath and his disciples went to the Seraj mountain valley for spiritual practices for a month. One day, the temperature dropped sharply, and it became clear that a snowstorm was approaching.
The disciples rushed to find their teacher to warn him that it was time to leave, and soon they found him meditating in the icy wind, almost covered in snow.
“When we went to talk to Satyendra Nath, we found him in a state of deep meditation in the snow-capped mountains. And we decided to record him on video,” said Rahul, one of his disciples.
According to Savarninath, another disciple of this yogi, Satyendra follows the Himalayan yoga tradition and has been meditating in snowy mountains for the past 22 years. He also added that the viral video, filmed by Rahul, is just one of several they recorded about Satyendra Nath over the past month.
It is known that Satyendra Nath is not the first yogi to meditate in extreme temperatures in the Himalayas, but he is probably the first one captured in such a state on video.
